STEVEN MEISEL

There's always a photographer, artist or designer that stands out when visiting exhibitions such as Vogue 100. Whilst there a few days ago the photographer who stood out to me the most was Steven Meisel.

Steven is an American fashion photographer who works regularly in Italian and US Vogue. He's close friends with Madonna - he already sounds cool right?! - and is now considered one of the most successful fashion photographers in the industry.

What captured my eye at the Vogue 100 expedition when looking through Steven's photography work is that the pictures were so diverse compared to others at the time. Steven was the first photographer in the 90's to really take to the streets and celebrate what Britain really has to offer in terms of scenery and diversification. His work was not set up in a studio, rather on the backdrop of a quiet London street or in an old English pub. This revolutionised the way in which fashion photographers captured their photos.

Meisel has since shot campaigns for Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Calvin Klein. He annually shoots the Prada campaigns- having done so since 2004.

Steven Meisel also takes credit for 'discovering' and then promoting the careers of the famous Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Natalia Vodianova and many more. Propelling them to fame by regularly using them in Vogue and various other campaigns.

Steven's work in present day is extremely different to that of his work that first captured my eye in the Vogue 100 exhibition. He now uses a wider diversification of models, due to the new expectations on the fashion industry. He also does not confine himself to only working in the scenery of Britain but also expresses himself through creative scenes made upon sets.

Steven Meisel is a force to be reckon with within the fashion industry. A force which many young, aspiring, fashion photographers will look up to for many years to come.
